Abiel Euceda Castro enjoyed basketball, video games and school. Popular with students and teachers alike, the Opportunity Academy 8th-grader came to the United States from Honduras when he was six years old. He struck up a friendship with a youngster named Dennis, who became his very best buddy. Abiel was a happy, special child, said his parents. And he believed in Santa Claus. When Abiel was 10 years old, he wrote a letter to Santa asking for a little brother. Soon after, baby Etan came along, and Abiel was certain Santa was real. “He thought [Etan] was a gift,” said mom Odali Castro. On August 22, 2022, Abiel died from a gunshot wound. In May of 2023, Opportunity Academy invited Abiel’s parents to attend what would have been their son’s graduation. There, students presented the couple with a booklet paying homage to the much-loved and much-missed Abiel.

Abiel era un niño feliz y muy especial, dijeron sus padres. Y creía en Santa Claus. Cuando Abiel tenia 10 años, le escribió una carta a Santa pidiéndole un hermanito. Poco tiempo después nació Etan y Abiel creyó con certitud que Santa existía. “Creyó que [Etan] era un regalo”, dijo su madre Odali Castro. El 22 de Agosto 2022 Abiel murió por una herida de bala. En Mayo 2023, Opportunity Academy invitó a los padres de Abiel a la graduación que sería de su hijo. Ahí fue que los estudiantes les presentaron un cuaderno como homenaje a su muy querido y extrañado hijo.

Jesus Daniel Martinez Garcia and his family moved to the United States in the year 2000. His mother, Claudia Garcia, looked forward to greater opportunities here. Jesus, 17 and a senior at Glencliff High School, loved playing soccer with his friends and listening to music with his brother. He also enjoyed his mother’s cooking. He was a very thoughtful child, his mother said. Undocumented and aware of what that meant, the young man knew his opportunities were limited. “The uncertainty frightened him,” said Ms. Garcia. “He knew he did not want to go back to Mexico.” As an immediate plan, Jesus decided to work with his mother cleaning houses following his graduation. “He was a good person who had goals for his life,” she said. On Sunday, October 1, 2023, while a passenger with several others in a pick-up truck, Jesus was shot and killed when the vehicle came under fire for unknown reasons.

Era un niño muy considerado, dijo su madre. Indocumentado y consciente de lo que eso significaba, el joven sabía que sus oportunidades eran limitadas. “La incertidumbre lo asustaba”, dijo la Sra. García. “Sabía que no quería regresar a México”. Como plan inmediato, Jesús decidió trabajar con su madre limpiando casas después de graduarse. “Era una buena persona con metas para su vida”, dijo ella. El domingo 1 de octubre de 2023, mientras viajaba como pasajero con otras personas en una camioneta, Jesús recibió un disparo mortal cuando el vehículo fue atacado por razones desconocidas.

Saturday, June 10, 2023, looked like the happiest day of Demetrius “DJ” Johnson’s young life, his granny Cynthia Johnson said. DJ, a sophomore at Cane Ridge High School, had just gotten a second job, the young lady he’d been eyeing had agreed to go out with him, and he and his sister had made up after a recent falling out. “He was really, really, happy. I remember his sister telling him that Saturday morning to quit grinning so much,” his grandmother recalled. The 16-year-old loved family, food, and music. He wrote songs and rapped them. While he loved sports, DJ’s body too often betrayed him. The young man suffered from asthma, had broken his arm, and had dislocated his shoulder. None of that stopped him, though, from trying wrestling, football or basketball. Late on the evening of June 10, 2023, DJ and his brother were in the parking lot of a South Nashville apartment complex when shots rang out. DJ was taken to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, where he subsequently died.

Sin embargo, nada de eso le impidió probar la lucha libre, el fútbol americano o el baloncesto. A última hora de la noche del 10 de junio de 2023, DJ y su hermano estaban en el estacionamiento de un complejo de apartamentos en el sur de Nashville cuando se oyeron disparos. DJ fue llevado al Hospital de Niños Vanderbilt, donde posteriormente murió.

Seventeen-year-old Leroy Brown was an honor student at Maplewood High School and worked at Smoothie King. Even so, he always had time to follow his passion of helping others, mom Porsha Brown recalled. “He tutored students younger than him and students his age. He wanted to see everyone succeed.” A YouTuber and gamer, Leroy had a bright future ahead of him. Describing her only child as a “shining star,” Ms. Brown said Leroy was kind to everyone he met and looked down on no one. “He had a positive vibe; he was very kind and humble,” she said. Leroy was so well-liked that his manager at Smoothie King and officials from two of the schools he attended spoke at his funeral service. “Everybody loved Leroy.” On Sunday, October 16, 2022, Leroy died by gunshot, “an innocent young man just in the comfort of his own home taken away.” On March 14, 2023, Leroy’s daughter Ava was born, a day after what would have been her daddy’s 18th birthday.

Eight-year-old Phillip’e Woodard liked to draw, paint, color and ride his bicycle. Like most youngsters his age, he loved playing games on his phone, said great-aunt Twana Patton. Phillip’e had a couple of best friends – his BFFs – named Diane and Brandon. Interestingly, both BFFs were grown-ups. Even so, Phillip’e found plenty of time to play with his brother Phillip. Phillip’e’s teachers at Shwab Elementary School spoke highly of him. He loved school and was extremely smart. Shortly before his death, he was accepted into the school’s gifted program. Said Ms. Patton: “He was very smart, independent, liked to do things on his own.” On Saturday, September 14, 2024, Phillip’e died from a gunshot wound.

Genesis Gonzales came to the United States from Honduras at the age of 12. The 15-year-old, who had most recently attended Antioch High School, was a vibrant girl with a bright smile and an independent streak, according to her family. She loved to paint and had decided to be a dancer – specifically, a ballerina – or perhaps a doctor. Family was important to Genesis. She enjoyed family outings to the lake, and she loved her younger brother Carlos and her older sister Heixy. She, in turn, was deeply loved by her family, said her mother Maria M. Gonzales Cruz. Genesis was very social by nature, a girl who “loved having sleepovers with friends,” her mom recalled. On Saturday, October 5, 2024, Genesis died after being hit by gunfire as she walked in a local park.

Toddler Ayden Pruitt loved to play. Dump trucks and balls were his favorite toys, and his favorite playmate was his twin brother Kayden. While Ayden was the playful twin, Kayden was more reserved – until Ayden started in on him. “Ayden would get Kayden into all kinds of stuff,” recalled mom Leondria Pittman. Ayden had his own tablet and loved to watch movies on it. He also loved playing with older sister Taliyah, who — sadly — is herself profiled in this volume of Voices from the Garden. Like his siblings, Ayden was very smart, said his grandfather Terry Dickson. “It was shocking, being as young as he was, that he was reading, knew the colors of things and the meaning of things,” said Dickson. That is how the family would like Ayden to be remembered. On Wednesday, July 21, 2024, Ayden died from a gunshot wound.

By the time Taliyah Frazier was four years old, she was already an avid reader. “She would prefer books over dolls. Reading just came natural for her,” said great-grandfather Terry Dickson. The preschooler was eager to start kindergarten in the fall of 2023. Taliyah loved purses, sunglasses and the YouTube educational cartoon series Cocomelon. And then there was Walmart. “When we’d go to Walmart, it was hard for us to go shopping without getting her things,” Dickson said. Taliyah was a true Nashville girl; her favorite footwear was boots. She had a phone, a tablet, dolls and even a Barbie car. But what she enjoyed most was playing with her younger twin brothers. Taliyah was “very close” to her siblings, said Dickson. She was friendly and outgoing, never met a child she didn’t like, and had a knack for making people smile. Her great-grandfather believes that, had she reached adulthood, Taliyah would have been a teacher or entered another field allowing her to help others. Taliyah died on May 31, 2023, one day after the car in which she was riding came under gunfire while waiting at a stoplight.

Although Emily Sanchez-Ramirez was only 10 years old, she had already mapped out her future. “She wanted to be a social-media influencer,” her aunt Fernanda Ramirez said. Emily’s mom, Laura Ramirez-Gonzalez, had taught her to prepare several dishes, including chicken and mushroom salsa. Emily displayed her cooking skills on her own TikTok profile. The Tusculum Elementary fourth grader had come with her mother to the United States from Colombia in January 2024, because the family wanted her to attend school here. Emily’s aunt described her as very smart, saying the child was good at math and was starting “to get good with English” after only a couple of months in Nashville. “She was a happy child and was so happy to be in the United States,” Ramirez said. On October 5, 2024, Emily was in a bike lane on Nashville’s Nolensville Road, riding behind her mother on a scooter, when they were struck by a speeding driver. The impact killed Emily and seriously injured her mother.

Su madre, Laura Ramírez-González, le había enseñado a preparar varios platillos, incluyendo pollo con salsa de champiñones. Emily mostró sus habilidades culinarias en su propio perfil de TikTok. La estudiante de cuarto grado de la Escuela Primaria Tusculum había llegado con su madre a Estados Unidos desde Colombia en enero del 2024, porque la familia quería que estudiara aquí. Su tía la describió como muy inteligente, diciendo que la niña era buena en matemáticas y que estaba empezando a “desenvolverse bien con el inglés” después de solo un par de meses en Nashville. “Era una niña feliz y estaba muy feliz de estar en Estados Unidos”, dijo Ramírez. Seventeen-year-old Israel Teniente Escaramuza’s family described him as a happy person who was always smiling. He attended Hunters Lane High School, where he excelled in math. Israel was very fond of his siblings and cousins. When his sister Brisa and brother Bryan were still in Mexico and Israel was in the U.S., he would call them every day, according to his mother. “He would play video games with them on the phone,” said Denis Escaramuza. “He was a patient and loving brother.” Israel was building a good life for himself in Tennessee. He had signed up for the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), and his long-term goal was to become a personal trainer. When Israel turned 17 on August 7, 2023, his uncles treated him to dinner at Hooters. He had a great time. The next day he was fatally shot just three miles from his home.

La familia de Israel Teniente Escaramuza, de diecisiete años, lo describió como una persona alegre y siempre sonriente. Asistió a la preparatoria Hunters Lane, donde destacó en matemáticas. Israel quería mucho a sus hermanos y primos. Cuando su hermana Brisa y su hermano Bryan aún vivían en México e Israel estaba en Estados Unidos, los llamaba todos los días, según su madre. “Jugaba videojuegos con ellos por teléfono”, dijo Denis Escaramuza. “Era un hermano paciente y cariñoso”. Israel estaba construyendo una buena vida en Tennessee. Se había inscrito en el Cuerpo de Entrenamiento de Oficiales de la Reserva (ROTC) y su meta a largo plazo era convertirse en entrenador personal. Cuando Israel cumplió 17 años el 7 de agosto de 2023, sus tíos lo invitaron a cenar en Hooters. Se lo pasó genial. Al día siguiente, recibió un disparo mortal a solo cinco kilómetros de su casa.
